Led To The King

The latter half of this psalm is a joyful movement toward the king's palace. The king will desire your beauty, it says, and immediately: since he is your lord, bow to him. The desire and the bowing sit right next to each other. Her beauty is not an invitation to vanity. It becomes the setting for reverence, because she is loved by the one to whom she entrusts herself.

Then the gifts arrive. The people of Tyre will seek your favor with gifts, the richest of the people. She does not purchase her place in the palace. She is welcomed as one whose worth is already recognized. And then the procession: in many-colored robes she is led to the king. Led. Behind her the virgins, her companions, follow, and the whole thing moves with joy and gladness as they enter the palace of the king.

For Christians, this bridal image opens toward Christ and the Church. Christ loves and sanctifies his Church, and the believer's life begins with receiving that prior gift. You don't have to manufacture your worth or bargain for God's welcome. But receiving grace isn't the same as doing nothing. The bride listens, bows, leaves behind what must be left behind, follows the procession, and enters with joy. The robes aren't presented as a trophy she made for herself; she arrives adorned for the king.

If you've been living as though you have to constantly prove you deserve God's presence, this psalm calls you to rest in his initiative. The way is guided, the companions are present, and the gladness is settled rather than nervous. You don't earn the invitation, but you do receive it. You don't save yourself, but you follow the Savior, bow before him as Lord, and let his love make your life fruitful.
