He Fashions Every Heart

The psalm opens with a blessing that sounds almost too simple: happy is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he has chosen as his heritage. God does not regard his people as an inconvenience to be tolerated. He claims them as his own and does not abandon them. That is the starting point.

Then the camera pulls back. The Lord looks down from heaven and sees all humankind. From where he sits enthroned he watches all the inhabitants of the earth. That could feel cold, a distant ruler surveilling his territory. But read the next line slowly. He fashions the hearts of them all. The one watching from the throne is the same one who made the thing he is watching. He is not a stranger studying you from far off. He is the Creator who knows the depths of the heart and understands the person he has made. And when it says he observes all their deeds, every one, that is not the gaze of a suspicious tyrant eager to condemn. It is the truthful sight of a God who sees with justice and mercy, who knows our hearts and calls us to conversion.

So the response need not be servile fear or anxious hiding. We can approach him with reverence and trust. Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and shield. That waiting is not passivity, and it is not a guarantee that God delivers what we want on our preferred schedule. It is the patient posture of someone who takes the faithful step in front of them while entrusting the outcome to God.

And then the part that gives the whole psalm away: our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Even before circumstances change, trust can begin to give the heart a quiet gladness, not because waiting is easy, but because God remains faithful within it.
