The Yoke That Fits

Ordinary Time

Today's reading · Matthew 11:25-30

Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Come to me, all you that are weary. He does not say come if you have it together. He says come if you are worn out and carrying too much, which is most of us most days. And the first thing he offers is rest. So far, easy to want. Then the line that should stop you: take my yoke upon you. Rest, and then a yoke. A yoke is not a pillow. It is the wooden frame you put across your shoulders to pull a load. He is not promising the burden disappears. He is offering to change which one you carry. Learn from me, he says, for I am gentle and humble in heart. That is the whole pitch. Not that he is powerful, though he is. That he is gentle. The kind of person you would actually want to be hitched alongside, who sets a pace you can keep, who does not crush you to prove a point. And then the part that sounds like a contradiction until you sit with it: my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. How is a yoke light? Maybe because a well-made yoke fits. It distributes the weight instead of grinding one spot raw. Maybe because you are not pulling alone anymore. The burdens we carry into this verse are often ones we built ourselves, heavy because they are ill-fitting, all on one shoulder. He is offering a trade. His yoke for yours. The one that fits, for the one that is breaking you.

Today's intention

Today I'll hand one self-made burden to Jesus and learn his gentler pace instead.
