Spread It Before the Lord
Ordinary Time
Today's reading · 2 Kings 19:14-19
Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; then Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord and spread it before the Lord. And Hezekiah prayed: 'Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see. So now, O Lord our God, save us, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are God alone.'
Hezekiah gets the worst letter of his life. An empire is at his gates, and the message is essentially this: your God cannot save you, no one else's did. Watch what he does with it. He does not call a council first. He does not draft a reply or rally the troops or spin the news. He goes up to the temple, and he spreads the letter out before the Lord. Picture it. The actual threat, the physical thing that is terrifying him, laid open in the presence of God, unedited. He does not summarize it or tidy it up. He lets God read it over his shoulder. Then he prays, and notice what he asks for. Not mainly comfort, not even mainly rescue for its own sake. He prays, save us, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are God alone. His fear gets folded into something bigger than his own survival. There is a whole practice hidden in this gesture. Most of us, when something frightens us, do one of two things. We try to fix it before we bring it to God, or we never quite bring it at all, just carry it alone and rehearse it at three in the morning. Hezekiah does neither. He takes the unsolved, unspun thing and spreads it out. The praying comes before the fixing, not after. That order changes everything.
Today's intention
Today I'll bring the thing I'm dreading to God before I try to manage it myself.
