Three Times, Don't Be Afraid

Three times in a few short verses, Jesus says do not be afraid. He is not pretending there is nothing to fear. He names the threats plainly, including people who can kill the body. He is not offering denial. He is resetting the scale. Watch how he does it. He reaches for the cheapest thing in the marketplace, two sparrows sold for a penny, a bird so common it is practically worthless. And not one of them, he says, falls to the ground apart from your Father. Then he goes smaller still: the hairs of your head are all counted. Not weighed, not estimated, counted. The argument runs from the tiny to the enormous. If God's attention reaches all the way down to a discarded sparrow and a single hair, then it certainly reaches you, who are worth more than many sparrows. Fear shrinks the world down to whatever is threatening you. Jesus widens it back out and puts the threat inside a much larger frame, one where nothing falls outside the Father's notice. That is what makes the last part possible, the call to acknowledge him out loud, in front of people, without flinching. Courage like that does not come from deciding to be brave. It comes from being known, completely, down to the hair, by someone who has already counted you as worth more than you would ever dare claim for yourself.
