Easy, Light

The yoke is easy. The burden is light. This is the Gospel for the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, and it's hard to imagine a better choice.

The Heart of Christ isn't primarily a devotional image. It's a claim about what God is actually like: gentle, humble, rest-giving. Those words come straight from Jesus in Matthew 11, and they land differently when you slow down on them. This isn't a description of a distant deity handing down commands. It's an invitation from someone who says, plainly, come to me.

Jesus doesn't promise the burdens vanish. He promises rest for your soul, and he ties that rest to taking his yoke and learning from him. There's a difference worth sitting with. The weight doesn't disappear the moment you show up. But you're no longer carrying it in isolation, grinding along under something that was never meant to be yours alone. You bring it to him. You learn from him. That's where the rest comes from.

A lot of the exhaustion in the spiritual life comes from treating prayer like a report card, like you have to arrive already sorted out. But the invitation is simpler than that. Come. Bring the weight. Let him teach you how to carry it. The gentleness and humility he describes aren't just personality traits. They're the shape of how he meets you.
