I Have Kept the Faith

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
Paul writes this from the end of his life, and the tone isn't triumphant in the way we might expect. It's quiet. Settled. He's not celebrating a conquest; he's reporting back. Fight, finish, keep. Three simple verbs for an entire life. What's striking is that third one: kept the faith. Not expanded it, not defended it, not won every argument with it. Kept it. Like something entrusted to you that you return intact. The crown he mentions isn't just for him, either. It's for all who have longed for his appearing. That word, longed, is doing something. The race Paul ran wasn't about being right. It was about wanting the right thing, persistently, until the very end. That's a life's work any of us can recognize ourselves in on our better days.
