The Word Doesn't Chain

Today's reading · 2 Timothy 2:8-15
Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David. That is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained.
Paul is writing from prison. Literal chains. And in the middle of that, he drops one of the most quietly staggering lines in all of scripture: the word of God is not chained. He can be locked up. The message cannot. There's something worth sitting with here, the idea that the thing we've been given to carry is actually indestructible. It doesn't need our protection, our perfect execution, our ideal circumstances. It just needs to move. And it does. Paul endures not because he's heroic but because he understands what he's carrying. The faithful saying he quotes is almost a song: if we die with him, we live; if we endure, we reign; if we're faithless, he remains faithful. The last line is the one. He cannot deny himself. The faithfulness isn't contingent on ours.
