Eyes Up

Ordinary Time

Psalm · 123:1-2

To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens. As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until he has mercy upon us.

There's something almost embarrassing about how honest this psalm is. Eyes up. Waiting. Watching for the smallest signal from the hand of God. Not a speech, not a sign in the sky. Just the quiet movement of a hand. The psalmist isn't performing confidence here. He's describing dependence, and doing it without apology. We spend a lot of energy trying to look like we have things figured out. The psalm invites something different: the dignity of the servant who knows exactly who they're watching. Attention itself becomes the prayer. Not words, not effort. Just eyes lifted, held there, waiting. That's not weakness. That's the whole posture of faith dressed down to its essentials.

Today's intention

Today I'll lift my eyes before I lift my phone.
