He Asked Anyway
Today's reading · May 28, Gospel - Mark 10:46-52
10:46 They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. 10:47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 10:48 Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 10:49 Jesus stood still and said, “Call him here.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; get up, he is calling you.” 10:50 So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 10:51 Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “My teacher, let me see again.” 10:52 Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.
Bartimaeus is sitting on the side of the road. Blind. Begging. And the moment he hears Jesus is passing by, he starts shouting.
The crowd tells him to be quiet. More than once. And he gets louder.
There's something worth sitting with there. He didn't have a polished prayer. He didn't wait until he had the right words or the right moment. He just knew who was walking by, and he wasn't going to let that moment pass without making some noise.
Then Jesus stops. Asks the question that feels almost too simple: "What do you want me to do for you?"
Jesus already knew. But he asked anyway. Because Bartimaeus needed to say it out loud. Naming what you need takes courage. It means admitting you can't fix it yourself.
"Let me see again." That's it. No long speech. Just the honest thing.
And then — immediately — he could see. And the first thing he does with his new sight is follow Jesus down the road.
That's the part that doesn't get enough attention. He wasn't healed so he could go back to his old spot. The healing changed the direction of his whole life.
So here's the question for today: What are you shouting about on the inside that you haven't actually said out loud to God yet? What do you need to stop being quiet about?
Bring the noise. He's already stopped walking.
