The Church Can Bind and Loose

In an age that's allergic to institutions, this is a real sticking point: who gave the Catholic Church the right to teach authoritatively what's to be believed and how to live? Isn't that between me and God?

It's between you and God, but God set it up with a church in the middle. Jesus gives the apostles a stunning authority: "whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven" (Matthew 18:18). "Bind" and "loose" were known rabbinic terms for declaring what's permitted or forbidden and rendering binding judgments. Jesus is handing real teaching and disciplinary authority to the Church, and promising heaven will back it up. The context is even practical: he's explaining how to settle disputes between believers, and the final court of appeal is "the church" (Matthew 18:17). Not your private reading. The church.

This isn't the Catholic Church inventing rules; it's the Church protecting what Jesus taught. He told the apostles, "He who hears you hears me" (Luke 10:16). That's delegated authority, straight from Christ. And it has a defined scope: faith and morals, and the ordering of life within the Church. It's not unlimited or arbitrary. It's the authority Christ actually entrusted, in the areas that matter most.

Honestly, that's a relief. The deepest questions about God aren't left to whoever argues loudest online. Christ gave us a living voice we can trust, one he promised to stand behind.
